How to Apply

Requirements for Admission
Candidates for advanced degrees in the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry should have an undergraduate major in one of the biological sciences, chemistry or physics. In preparation for graduate studies, the department recommends that all applicants complete course work in biology, general genetics, physics, organic and physical chemistry. If the applicant is unable to obtain course work in physical chemistry prior to their graduate studies, then an equivalent course will be required as part of their graduate curriculum. Please also see the Graduate School requirements page. If you have any questions about the admissions process please contact:

1. Application. The Graduate School maintains a web site for applicants to apply on line. Applicants must apply on line at the Graduate School website.

Reasons for Graduate Study. Generally one to two pages in length, this statement provides an opportunity for you to promote yourself, and to educate the admissions committee as to why you want to obtain a PhD. Since we are a strongly research-oriented department, we recommend that you describe your professional and research interests/goals and accomplishments, and include a summary of specific projects/internships undertaken and lab skills acquired.

If relevant, individuals are encouraged to include a brief statement concerning special circumstances that may have affected their undergraduate record.

2. Transcripts. You must send official transcripts from each institution attended.

3. Recommendations. Three recommendation letters are required from individuals who are familiar with your research and/or academic work. These letters should be submitted online. Since research experience is a key criterion for admission to our graduate program, a letter from your research advisor is a crucial indicator of how you function in a laboratory environment.

4. Graduate Record Exam (GRE). We require scores from the General (Verbal, Quantitative, and Qualitative) GRE exam. (We generally recommend selecting major field code 0202 ? Biochemistry, or 0699 - Health and Medical Sciences ? other. The ETS code for UW Madison is 1846. Note that the information is transmitted from ETS to the departments by using the applicant name, therefore the exact matching of field codes is not critical). A subject test is recommended but not required.

If you have not received your scores prior to submitting the application, email us both the raw scores and the percentiles to us as soon as you receive them. We will verify the information at a later date.

5. Summary of Experience, Honors, Publications and Activities. Please complete this summary form and return it to us. If you have a CV, please feel free to substitute it for this form if it addresses these topics. These forms will also be used to prepare nominations for university fellowships/training grants during the application process.

6. International applicants must also provide:

? Official documentation of all courses taken and grades received from each undergraduate or postgraduate institution attended. Records must be in the original language of the institution attended, and accompanied by official English translations

? Official certification of degrees and dates awarded. Academic transcripts/records must have a seal and signature in ink from the institution?s authorized official.

? Official TOEFL or MELAB scores. TOEFL scores are sent electronically from ETS to UW-Madison (institution code: 1846). Official MELAB scores must be sent to the Graduate School

? International applicant financial information

Deadline

The deadline for application to the Biomolecular Chemistry PhD program is December 15. Late applications may not be considered for fellowship nominations.
